Presentation 3 (Scripting)

I. Find 2 scripts of well‐known films (tips: you can search scripts from
this website: http://www.imsdb.com ). For instance, you can find the
script of the blockbuster movie “The Tourist” written by Julian Fellows in
http://www.imsdb.com/scripts/Tourist,‐The.html.
Select minimum 5 pages (each) of the two scripts you selected and
analyze them by answering the following questions:
- Which are the characters /roles in this script?
- Point out the voice over.
- Point out the camera movement
- Point out the transition
- How does it present place and time?

The two scripts I chose were for the movies, "Up" and "Marley and Me".

Voice overs were more prominent in the up script because of their use of a narrator at the beginning and off screen voices used to generate an air of mystery. Below is the syntax used to denote the nature of the voice being used in scene. Eg.

NEWSREEL ANNOUNCER (V.O.)
Yes, as Muntz himself says:
"Adventure is--"
GIRL'S VOICE (O.S.)
"Adventure is out there!"
Carl stops. Who said that?

VO - voice over (The character says something like a narrator or as if you are reading his thoughts)
POV - point of view (The camera is placed where the character would be. We are seeing through the character's eyes)
OS - off screen (We don't see the character but we hear the voice coming from outside the room or down the street or on the telephone, etc.)

The camera movement and transitions, as well as the place and time is usually indicated in bold at the beginning of a scene. Eg.

EXT. CARL AND ELLIE'S HOUSE - DUSK
Carl walks into the house, holding a single blue balloon.
FADE TO BLACK.
INT. CARL'S BEDROOM - MORNING - SEVERAL YEARS LATER
An ALARM CLOCK BUZZES. An aged hand shuts it off and picks
up the nearby glasses.

or

114 INT. 345 CHURCHILL ROAD - MORNING 114
As the sun now streams in through the front windows down onto
Marley, who is sound asleep. We hear A CAR DOOR CLOSE and he
raises his head...
A moment later, THE FRONT DOOR OPENS and John comes in and
Marley greets him, jumps up on his chest.

II. Write the script for your assignment II (Ken Burns).

Assignment 2 [Individual]: Ken Burns

Title: Motion Photos for CNM OR NUS
Medium: “Motion Photograph” /Video
Design of a simple movie using photographs (i.e., still image)
Theme: Promote NUS or CNM with Creative 'Movies' (Create a .mov for a Final Product)
Description:
 Develop a plot on the theme (e.g., about our university or our CNM programme; why you choose
NUS/CNM, what you enjoy/like in the uni/campus, the uniqueness of NUS/CNM). How to promote
and let others see the benefits/advantages of studying in NUS and CNM from your point of view
as a student.

Stage 1: (Concept Development)
 Develop a plot for the theme.
 [Optional] Concept development: Thumbnail sketches of your concepts (i.e., can be a storyboard,
pictures, photos or hand-drawn)
 Create 10 images (e.g. thumbnail, drawing or photograph)
 Ideally, the story should consist of intro (e.g. 2 images), main story (e.g.4 images), climax if any
(e.g., 2 images), and conclusion/ending e.g., (2 images).
 Feedback: Present concepts to your friends for discussion
 Revise according to your friends advice.
 Go back to feedback above i.e., find more friends for advice, and revise till you are satisfied.
 Deadline: the week after Chinese New Year (8 Feb 2011)

At first, I thought of being deliberately bitter in the audio and support it with pictures that paint a funny side of the things I am talking about but while entertaining it felt empty and meaningless. So I trawled the web for ideas and came upon this beautiful done video by a former NM3208 student
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IyA3o5QdFC0 and immediately I thought of some my dear seniors who would be graduating at the end of this semester. With that, I thought perhaps this could double as a tribute to them and their time in NUS and by that card serve as meaningful insight into the what a potential NUS student could hope to expect.

The wording may not be very clear from my scribbles... So here's the script I came up with:

Being a student in Singapore can be real pain sometimes
All your life people are in your face about your grades
It’s always all about results.. results… results
we’re not people
We’re letters and numbers… As & Bs, rankings and percentiles
At NUS, things aren’t so different
No… It’s MUCH WORSE
Slaves to the bell curve
Always chasing the ideal CAP (goals: Year 1=5.0, year, 2=3.5, year 3=survive...)
But to be fair…
Being in NUS has its perks
Vibrant student life
Top grade facilities…. For research
As well as for keeping fit
Even facilities for strengthening your mental fortitude
Sure… We all have a few complaints
I know I do
Yet I imagine several years down the road
I’ll look back fondly on the good old days back in NUS
The friendships
The struggles
The laughter
The tears
All those memories
To all you awesome people who made this journey in NUS such an amazing experience
From the bottom of heart,
Thank you

It Begins......

Today marks the beginning of my journey in NM3208, the module I've always wanted to but been way to scared to take. Watching the works of past students in today's lecture further stoked my interest, yet all at the same time reminded me of just why I was so daunted by the death defying prospect of tackling so heavy a workload. Still, I really am looking forward to this module and what I do hope will prove to be a fruitful semester. I just thought I'd share a poem by e e cummings that I recently fell in love with. Its called "dive for dreams" and its about taking chances. (Haha... Apt I think because with this module, I feel I'm really kinda jumping off the deep end =P)

by ee cummings
dive for dreams
or a slogan may topple you
(trees are their roots
and wind is wind)
trust your heart
if the seas catch fire
(and live by love
though the stars walk backward)
honour the past
but welcome the future
(and dance your death
away at the wedding)
never mind a world
with its villains or heroes
(for good likes girls
and tomorrow and the earth)
in spite of everything
which breathes and moves, since Doom
(with white longest hands
neating each crease)
will smooth entirely our minds
-before leaving my room
i turn, and (stooping
through the morning) kiss
this pillow, dear
where our heads lived and were.

silently if, out of not knowable

silently if, out of not knowable
night's utmost nothing,wanders a little guess
(only which is this world)more my life does
not leap than with the mystery your smile
sings or if(spiralling as luminous
they climb oblivion)voices who are dreams,
less into heaven certainly earth swims
than each my deeper death becomes your kiss
losing through you what seemed myself,i find
selves unimaginably mine;beyond
sorrow's own joys and hoping's very fears
yours is the light by which my spirit's born:
yours is the darkness of my soul's return
-you are my sun,my moon, and all my stars
