this website: http://www.imsdb.com ). For instance, you can find the
script of the blockbuster movie “The Tourist” written by Julian Fellows in
http://www.imsdb.com/scripts/Tourist,‐The.html.
Select minimum 5 pages (each) of the two scripts you selected and
analyze them by answering the following questions:
- Which are the characters /roles in this script?
- Point out the voice over.
- Point out the camera movement
- Point out the transition
- How does it present place and time?
The two scripts I chose were for the movies, "Up" and "Marley and Me".
Voice overs were more prominent in the up script because of their use of a narrator at the beginning and off screen voices used to generate an air of mystery. Below is the syntax used to denote the nature of the voice being used in scene. Eg.
NEWSREEL ANNOUNCER (V.O.)
Yes, as Muntz himself says:
"Adventure is--"
GIRL'S VOICE (O.S.)
"Adventure is out there!"
Carl stops. Who said that?
VO - voice over (The character says something like a narrator or as if you are reading his thoughts)
POV - point of view (The camera is placed where the character would be. We are seeing through the character's eyes)
OS - off screen (We don't see the character but we hear the voice coming from outside the room or down the street or on the telephone, etc.)
The camera movement and transitions, as well as the place and time is usually indicated in bold at the beginning of a scene. Eg.
EXT. CARL AND ELLIE'S HOUSE - DUSK
Carl walks into the house, holding a single blue balloon.
FADE TO BLACK.
INT. CARL'S BEDROOM - MORNING - SEVERAL YEARS LATER
An ALARM CLOCK BUZZES. An aged hand shuts it off and picks
up the nearby glasses.
or
114 INT. 345 CHURCHILL ROAD - MORNING 114
As the sun now streams in through the front windows down onto
Marley, who is sound asleep. We hear A CAR DOOR CLOSE and he
raises his head...
A moment later, THE FRONT DOOR OPENS and John comes in and
Marley greets him, jumps up on his chest.
